Health Insurance Options in Michigan

 

Depending on your household size and income, your may have a number of options for seeking health insurance.  Read about the different programs below to decide which is best for you, and click the links to explore these options

Healthy Michigan Plan (Medicaid)

 

Medicaid, or the Healthy Michigan Plan, is Insurance through the the state of Michigan for low-income individuals and families. You can take our screener to see if you may qualify, but the best way to find out if you qualify is to apply!

The Health Insurance Markeplace

 

The Health Insurance Marketplace (through healthcare.gov) is a good option for those with incomes slightly higher than the Medicaid limit. You can compare plans, and select the one whose cost and coverage fits your needs.  For many individual and families, there are tax credits available to make the plans affordable. MSupport: For those who do not qualify for Medicaid, and cannot find an acceptable plan on the Health Insurance Marketplace, you may qualify for assistance.

Healthy Michigan Plan (Medicaid)

 

  • Insurance through the state of Michigan for low -income individuals or families 

    • Minimal cost-sharing, with co-pays of $1-$3 for most services

    • Eligibility is determined by your household size and income level; US citizenship or documented residence of at least 5 years is also required

    • If you qualify and enroll, you will choose a health plan, which then assigns you to a primary care provider

    • Covered services include: ambulatory patient services, emergency services, hospitalization, maternity care, mental health and substance abuse disorder treatment, prescription drugs, rehabilitative services and devices, laboratory services, preventive and wellness services, and chronic disease management

  • Dental services are coordinated by the health plan

The Federal Health Insurance Markeplace

 

  • Insurance for those with slightly higher incomes than Medicaid beneficiaries

    • Depending on your household size and income level, you may be eligible for help paying insurance premiums with tax credits

 

 

    • Different plan levels (Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum) allow you to choose a premium and deductible you can afford

    • Covered services include: ambulatory patient services, emergency services, hospitalization, maternity care, mental health and substance abuse disorder treatment, prescription drugs, rehabilitative services and devices, laboratory services, preventive and wellness services, and chronic disease management

    • Unless you have a “Qualified Life Event” (e.g. loss of job, change in household size), enrollment in a marketplace plan is ONLY available during the Open Enrollment Period, November 1, 2015 to January 31, 2016

  • Sliding scale-based care through the University of Michigan Health System (UMHS)

    • An option if you need specialty care and do not qualify for other types of insurance (e.g. Medicaid and Marketplace plans)

    • Covers all necessary medical care

    • Does not include dental care
